KUALA LUMPUR: Asia Ocean Resources Bhd has partnered with Penang Port Sdn Bhd to develop, operate and manage a dedicated tuna landing and processing hub at the port.

Penang Port and Asia Ocean will set up modern facilities including water supply and bunker fuel services, a seamen's centre with food and beverage outlets, cold storage rooms and a European Union-certified processing plant.

The hub will also feature power supply connections for vessels and containers, alongside other ancillary infrastructure necessary for smooth and continuous operations.

Penang Port will allocate a suitable port area for the hub, assist Asia Ocean in obtaining all necessary approvals and permits and provide utilities and port infrastructure connectivity.

Asia Ocean will be responsible for investing in, designing, constructing, equipping and commissioning the facilities, as well as managing day-to-day operations in compliance with the EU, US Food and Drug Administration and other relevant domestic and international standards.

The memorandum of agreement also provides for the establishment of a joint working committee, comprising representatives from both parties, to coordinate implementation, promote Penang as a global tuna hub, attract local and international fishing fleets, and liaise with authorities to streamline inspections, licensing and regulatory approvals.

The agreement serves as a preliminary framework pending the negotiation of a definitive agreement, which the parties aim to finalise within two years from the execution.
