BUTTERWORTH (July 26): Penang Port Sdn Bhd (Penang Port) on Friday announced the acquisition of five Kalmar container handling machines to optimise operations and improve service levels.

Penang Port CEO Datuk Sasedharan Vasudevan said that this significant investment involves the purchase of four empty container handlers and one Reach Stacker.

"The empty container handlers will be used to manage empty containers, marking a milestone as this is the first time Penang Port is utilising container handling equipment operated by our own workforce.

"This strategic move aims to enhance operational efficiency at a more effective cost, while the Reach Stacker, equipped with a container weighing system, will be used for the first time in Penang Port's container weighing operations," he said in a statement.

Sasedharan highlighted that Kalmar's container handling machines, renowned for their reliability and extensive experience in port machinery, will revolutionise Penang Port's container services operations.

He added that the new assets are not only equipped with the latest port equipment technology but are also designed to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and streamline operations.

Earlier, the handover ceremony for the equipment was held at the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT), attended by Mach 1 Group CEO Pan Chee Seng and Kalmar AMEA Region Vice President Teo Yew Boon.
