Historic Penang warehouse to be turned into retail space

The port operator says the existing building will be kept intact but will be redeveloped to include retail spaces for the benefit of cruise passengers.
GEORGE TOWN: Three companies have been shortlisted to redevelop a near-200-year-old warehouse located between Fort Cornwallis and the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal.
The development will also include the rehabilitation of an abandoned yacht club and the construction of a new marina, to cost RM40 million to RM60 million.
The work will be undertaken by one of the three shortlisted companies in an open tender by 2026, according to Sasedharan Vasudevan, CEO of port operator Penang Port Sdn Bhd, which is leasing the 21,000 sq m space (including the warehouses) from the Penang Port Commission.
This development maintains the heritage without compromising some of the architectural concepts we are exploring, Sasedharan told reporters here.
He said the development will include a mix of food and beverage outlets and will be undertaken in partnership with an international brand.
The retail space would largely benefit the large number of cruise passengers arriving at Swettenham Pier.
Petroleum depots to be moved
Separately, Sasedharan said two large-scale petroleum depots in Butterworth, operated by Shell and Petron, will be moved to a new site in Perai. The depots are the sole distribution centre for fuel to petrol stations in the northern peninsula.
He said the two depots will join the North Petroleum Terminal at the mouth of the Perai river, operated by PPSB, and will be expanded at a cost of RM70 million by 2025.
This follows the state government’s decision not to renew the leases for the depots, which have been a subject of safety concerns because of their proximity to transport hub Penang Sentral, where ferry, rail and bus services converge.
The two depots have been in operation since before Merdeka.
Sasedharan said the port company was working to consolidate fuel storage facilities with existing facilities, including those of Chevron and Petronas at Perai.
