Passengers stunned as submarine surfaces next to Penang ferry

28 SEPTEMBER 2015, BY The Malaysian Insider Online
People on board the Penang ferry were surprised this morning when a submarine surfaced right next to their vessel, according to a report on The Star Online.

Collins class guided missile submarine HMAS Sheean from the Royal Australian Navy arrived in port at 11.30am in preparation for an exercise with its Malaysian counterparts.

Penang Port Sdn Bhd senior general manager (corporate support division) Md Derick Basir told the news portal that the vessel would be here until October 2.

Typically, HMAS Sheean has a complement of 48 officers and men; it carries Harpoon anti-ship missiles and wire-guided torpedoes; and it has a range of up to 11,500nm. Unusually, the submarine is the only Australian naval vessel named after a sailor, Teddy Sheean, killed defending his ship from Japanese air attack in 1942. – September 28, 2015.
