GEORGE TOWN: Penang got a taste of the maritime luxury when the 347.1m length Quantum of the Seas called at the Port Swettenham Cruise Terminal today.

The cruise ship with 6,532 passengers and crew on board arrived at the port about 7am and departed about 4pm the same day for Singapore

The ship is on a close to two-month journey which started on May 2 from New York, USA, and end in Shanghai, China, on June 24.

The liner is one of three "Quantum" class ships owned by cruise operator Royal Caribbean International.

This is one of the largest cruise ships to have called at Penang with state Tourism Development Committee chairman Danny Law on hand to welcome the arrival.

Captain Screko Ban said the ship provided a unique experience for passengers with many entertainment features and dining options.

He said this included a flying simulator and the "North Star" ride which allows passengers a 360 degree view of the seas.

"We also have an 18 restaurants in the ship which offers a great variety for guests and is well received," he said in an impromptu press conference on board.
