GEORGE TOWN: Penang ferry services operator Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) has clarified that the Pulau Payar ferry was not on fire as reported last Friday.

PPSB Support Services Division head Md Derick Basir said there was no fire on the ferry after smoke was seen emitting from the vessel then.

He said the ferry experienced a minor technical issue in which one of its six cylinders in the engine malfunctioned causing heavy smoke to be discharged from the exhaust funnel.

He said the captain followed the procedure to re-berth the vessel at the Sultan Abdul Halim terminal in Butterworth.

He said tug boats were deployed to be on standby as an added precaution, noting the ferry was leaving the Butterworth terminal enroute to the Raja Tun Uda terminal on the island.

"Upon re-berthing, all passengers and vehicles were discharged and transferred to another ferry," he said in a statement today adding the vessel has since been repaired.
