In anticipation of the increase number of ferry users during the recent Chinese New Year holidays   (18 – 22 February), Penang Port set up a Special Ops team comprising of the port’s Police, Fire & Rescue and OSHE Units.

Approximately 30 additional personnel were stationed at both the Sultan Abdul Halim (Butterworth) and Raja Tun Uda (George Town) ferry terminals throughout the four day period to facilitate traffic, attend to emergencies and assist travellers.

According to Md Derick Basir, Senior General Manager for Support Services, as a result of the success of the team during the recent festive period, the deployment of such a focus team to facilitate ferry operations during busy periods especially major festive seasons would be a standard practise in the future.

According to Fitri Thomas Lubis an Indonesian tourist who was attended to by the team when she fainted at the terminal (due to excruciating gastric), she was very thankful to the team for their assistance.

“I am very impressed with their professionalism. I was on the ambulance within 5 minutes” she said.
